Pellet Burning Stoves

Fueled by a recycled and sustainable resource, pellet stoves are excellent for zone-heating your home. Freestanding stoves are more effective as a supplemental heating source than even a fireplace insert since they radiate heat in all directions. Pellets, made of recycled saw dust, wood chips and bark, are as aromatic as wood with less work and lower emissions. Reduce your heating bills this winter while you relax in front of your pellet stove.

What are Pellets Exactly?
wood burning fireplaces hudson valley ny
Recycled bark, wood pieces, chips and shavings, that would otherwise have gone into landfills, are compressed into uniform pellets to create this fuel source. The compression process removes most moisture from these pellets which is what allows them to burn hotter and cleaner than regular firewood. As a result, they burn 80-90% more efficiently. The emissions from pellets are so minimal that they are not regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency. Even in areas of the country where burning wood is restricted, burning pellets is usually unrestricted.
wood burning fireplaces hudson valley ny Unlike firewood, pellets do not have to be seasoned. You can use them as soon as you purchase them. They come in manageable 40 pound bags that are easy to stack and store. You can find them at most box stores and feed stores. There are three grades of pellets: premium, standard and utility. Utility grade is seldom used in residential pellet stoves. Standard grade pellets tend to be average or lower quality and produce more ash. These are not recommended for use in most home stoves. Premium grade are higher quality and burn more cleanly. There is still a wide variety of types of pellets within this grade depending on the combination of soft and hard wood pieces, bark content and saw dust content. Dark pellets tend to have a higher bark content which means that they produce more ash. Usually lighter pellets have the least bark and are best to burn. Most people like to try out different kinds to see which type works best in their stove.
